Backpacks are such a great invention.
We didn’t have them back in the far off days of my youth. Instead, we had haversacks.
These were needed for camping and hiking with the Brownies and Guides.
They were practical things rather than stylish.
You didn’t want to carry your schoolbooks in a haversack (you used a satchel),
Riding or swimming gear went into a sports bag with handles or a strap.
Today, colourful and stylish backpacks abound.
Ours are all horsey-themed.
They’re great for school or travel because they’re roomy with lots of useful pockets.
And there’s a great selection of colours and designs to choose from. Also,
Did you know there’s a horsey connection with the good old haversack?
The name comes from an obsolete German word, Hafersack (sometimes Habersack).
These were bags soldiers used to carry oats to feed their horses.
We don’t recommend our bags for that; sandwiches and drinks for the wearer are a better option!
Best wishes,
Tracy
